Learn to Row Group
Our Learn to Row group program is comprised of at least 8 core hours of instruction by our experienced and talented instructors. You will learn how to row and discover the wonderful feeling that comes from gliding over the water.
The course starts with learning water safety, details about your boat and oars, and basic stroke technique on indoor rowing machines and on dockside rowing shells. By the 2nd hour, confident of your newly mastered stroke, you will launch off into Lake Ontario, familiarizing yourself with balancing the boat, and moving it through the water, and returning it to the dock. Each session dedicates an additional 15 minutes for warm up and on-shore stroke reinforcement before launch and 15 min for warm down after docking, to ensure your body is adequately prepared to row and recovers from rowing.
Upon completion of the course, many stay on as Argo members to refine their skills in our Development program, focusing on technique refinement, overall conditioning, and even performance under race conditions. All of this in preparation to join one of the recreational or competitive programs at the club.
Classes start at the end of April, and run till the end of August. The cost of the course is $339 (including HST).Learn to Row Clinic
If you are not sure if rowing is for you, our Learn to Row Clinic is for you. The 3 hour introductory session will allow you to meet our experienced coaches and talented competitive teams, learn the basics of the rowing stroke, and try your hand at rowing on our protected water course.
Rowing clinics run on the first 3 Saturdays and Sundays of the rowing season, starting at the end of April. After we have successfully captivated you, you can sign up for the foundational LTR Group course to learn the skills required to row as part of a crew.
The cost of the clinic is $71 (including HST).
Learn to Row Private
Private lessons are available for individuals or groups that are unable to attend our group sessions, or who would like a private, personalized experience. Private classes are scheduled in blocks of either 6 or 9, 60 minute sessions, with 6 hours recommended for groups of 1-2, and 9 hours for larger groups. Classes are normally conducted in the morning or early afternoon when the water is the calmest, however scheduling is based on the availability of the group.
Sessions are priced on a, per seat, per instructor basis. For example a 6-hour course for single student is $438+HST, however a 9-hour course for a group of 4 is only $387+HST per person.
For further details and pricing, please contact the Director of Introductory Programs at LTR@argonautrowingclub.com
Discounts are available for Corporate groups.
Fitness and Skill Requirements
All students must be capable of treading water and staying afloat, although it is not strictly necessary that you know how to swim as personal floatation devices (PFD's) are available in case of emergencies. You should be reasonably fit, in order to lift boats and carry them to the dock, and handle an increased heart-rate as we build up our speed on the water. Please note that manufacturer's specifications limit rowers to 90 kg or 200 lbs. Please contact the club if you have any questions.
What to wear?
Running shoes, shorts, t-shirt, and old socks. On warm sunny days, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat and a bottle of water to stay hydrated. On cool windy days, a sweatshirt and long pants. If it looks like rain, a waterproof jacket and hat, and an extra set of dry clothes in case we get wet. Avoid loose-fitting clothing as it may impede movement and get caught in the equipment. The Club as locker/changeroom facilities.
Weather?
We always meet at the scheduled time. In case of inclement weather, the class may move indoors for technique and fitness training on the ergs. We will row in light rain, provided other conditions are favourable.
Club location?
The club is located on the waterfront in west Toronto, just south of Jameson Avenue. If driving, we have a large parking lot, down Net Ave south off the Lakeshore. If coming by TTC, use the King West or Queen West streetcar, get off at Jameson Ave and walk south, across the Lakeshore footbridge and into our walkway (red brick building). See directions.
