MOTHERS DAY REGATTA RESULTS
Congratulations to Kate Morris and Ali Sernol for winning silver in the Junior Women's 2x at this year's Mother's Day Regatta.  It was their first race representing their high school Bishop's Stachan.  Also, congratulations to Miruna Ioan for her 5th place finish in the Sr. Women's 1x, representing Etobicoke Collegiate.  Both Humberside's Sr. Women's 8+ and Sr. Men's 2x had challenging heats and didn't advance.  However, despite the blustery cross wind, and chilling weather all crews had a great first regatta!

47th ANNUAL DOUBLE BLUE BANQUET AND AWARDS CEREMONY
Congratulations to the winners of this year’s ARC rowing awards. The awards were presented at the Double Blue Banquet held on Saturday, November 21. The banquet was a great success with 95 members and guests in attendance.  The highlight of the evening was the opportunity for members to meet and talk to Adam Kreek, 2008 Canadian Olympic gold medalist and David Calder, 2008 Canadian Olympic silver medalist.

In addressing the crowd, Adam and David shared their enthusiasm for rowing speaking about their experiences in preparing for and participating in the pressure cooker of international competitions. Adam spoke of the importance of “positive framing” – building from small successes to deal with the unpredictability of training and competition.  David wrote an entry in his blog about the evening and meeting Argo and former Olympian Steve Sandor. Please check out his blog entry at http://www.davidcalder.ca/

Head Coach, Kerry Knight, presented this year’s awards and outlined the accomplishments of the nominees in the various categories. Kerry also spoke highly of the dedication and achievements of all Argonaut rowers even though not everyone could be singled out for special attention.

The award winners were as follows:
    •    Female Sculler: Kathleen Hearn
    •    Male Sculler: Jeff Alex
    •    Female Development Rower: Rebecca McKeand
    •    Male Development Rower: Peter Robertson
    •    Female Masters Rowers: Sarah Foottit and Karen Dawson
    •    Male Masters Rower: Dan Dyck
    •    Adaptive Rower: Bill McGuire
    •    Female Junior Rowers: Alexandra Sermol and Miruna Ioan
    •    Male Junior Rower: Thomas Hipkin
    •    Crew of the Year: Masters Women’s Four – Devon Wood (coxswain), Lisa Carrol (stroke), Karen Dawson, Michelle Mayer, and Sarah Foottit (bow).
    •    Senior Female Rower: Kate Soper
    •    Most Improved: Fei Fei Lui

Crew of the Year - Masters Womens 4+ From L: Karen Dawson, Sarah Foottit, Lisa Carroll, and Michelle Mayer.

The presentation of the ARC Oarsman and Oarswoman of the year went to Sandy Grewal and Sarah Foottit.  Kerry drew attention to the inscriptions on both the Daisy Moore Trophy (The Argonaut Oarswoman of the Year) and the Old Boys Association Award (Oarsman of the Year) and how the inscriptions so suited Sarah and Sandy – these trophies are presented to the oarswoman/oarsman whose performance and attitude best exemplifies the spirit inherent in the motto of the Argonaut Rowing Club, “Pull Together”.

The presentation of the Jim Millar Memorial Award to Chris French was made by the award donor, Steve Sandor with introductory remarks by Anne Shelton.  Anne outlined the variety and range of the volunteer activities that Chris had been engaged in over the year in support of the club and its members.  It was also noted that Chris has been appointed by the Board of Directors to follow in the footsteps of Larry Marshall as the club’s Rowing Captain.

The President of Row Ontario, Lynda Dundas, congratulated ARC recipients of the 2009 Row Ontario Volunteer Certificates.  This year’s recipients were Jeff Alex, Martha Coffey, Chris French, Jim Lyttle, Gerry Martin, Gerry McLeod and Frank Tamasi.

Martha Coffey, ARC President, presented the ARC 2009 Awards of Merit to Jeff Alex, Joel Burgon, Michael Greig, Larry Marshall and Frank Tamasi.  These awards recognize the extra special contribution that members provide during the year in support of the club and its programs.

2009 Award of Merit awards recipients. From L: Larry Marshall, Martha Coffey (presenter), Frank Tamasi, Joel Burgeon, Jeff Alex, Michael Greig.

Coach mugs were presented as a token of thanks to the highly dedicated coaches who give so willingly of their time and expertise.  Those present to accept their mugs included Brian Kapeluch, Chris French, Larry Marshall and Frank Tamasi.

A special moment in the evening’s proceedings was when the outgoing Rowing Captain, Larry Marshall, spoke of the contribution made to the club’s rowing program by our Head Coach, Kerry Knight.  As members are aware Kerry is leaving the position of Head Coach after three very productive and successful years.  Larry drew upon Kerry’s accomplishments in support of the operations of the club’s programs and the legacy he is leaving by reciting a highly original poem that borrowed from a “A Night Before Christmas”.  On behalf of all the club's members Larry presented Kerry with a gift to show our thanks and appreciation.

A big thank you goes to our banquet managers, Lynn Bebee and Lou Molinaro for decorating the club for this special event and arranging for the DJ.
