Junior Rowing Programs

The purpose of the Argonaut Junior Rowing Program is to introduce junior boys and girls to the sport of rowing. The program’s mission is to provide a fun, safe, values-based, inclusive environment where rowers will learn the fundamentals of rowing, teamwork, personal responsibility and skill development. Our approach is holistic in that we consider every athlete’s goals, as well as their physical and emotional development.
Therefore we offer two tracks. Our recreational track enables rowers to focus on skill development and fun. Our competitive track includes the same focuses as the recreational, within a competitive environment. These two streams have different practice, attendance and racing expectations. The following explains the program options ARC offers to their junior rowers:
CLUB PROGRAM OFFERINGS:
Learn to Row:
If you have never rowed before you can learn to row through our Learn to Row or by participating in Camp Argo
Sprouts/Under 15: Offered during our Summer Session
- Introductory to rowing program focusing on skill development
- Must have completed a Learn to Row (LTR), or Camp Argo, and therefore be a “Novice” or aged 14 up to and before their 15th birthday prior to December 31st
- 3 practices/week: Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 8am – 9:30am
- Races as per coach’s discretion, “Skills Olympics”
Recreational: Offered year round
- A recreational program, focusing on continuing skill development.
- Second year of rowing and/or who have completed the Sprouts program.
- Ages 15 to 18
- 3 optional practices/week: Monday, Wednesday, Friday
- Summer: 8am – 9:30am, Fall/Winter/Spring: 4:30pm – 6pm
- Recreational races only (optional), which include, but are not limited to: Barrie Sprints, Dominion Day Regatta, Tops and Bottoms, Hogtown Heats, and Frostbite Sprints.
UNDER 17
- Competitive program, focusing on developing competitive skills, and race implementation.
- Ages 15 up to and before their 17th birthday prior to December 31st
- Must have completed the Sprouts Program
- 5 mandatory practices/week: Monday to Friday
- Summer: 7am – 8:30am, Fall/Winter/Spring: 4:30pm – 6pm
- To participate in the Ontario Summer Games an athlete must be in this group.
- Races on weekends: Guelph CORA, CORA Champs, Ontario Champs, Canadian Henley, Head of the Welland, Head of the Trent, Head of the Charles, Head of the Fish, CIRC, Ontario Indoor Championships
UNDER 19
- Competitive program, focusing on developing competitive skills and race implementation.
- Ages 17 up to and before their 19th birthday prior to December 31st. Must have completed the Sprouts Program
- 6 mandatory practices/week: Monday to Saturday
- Summer: 7am -8:30am, Fall/Winter/Spring: 4:30pm – 6pm (Saturday 8:30am -10am)
- To try-out for the Junior National Team, an athlete must participate in this group.
- Races on weekends. All noted races are mandatory. Please mark availability for the Royal Canadian Henley and Head of the Charles regattas. Marking availability is not a guarantee for crew selection
- Races on weekends: Head of the Martindale, JNT Time Trials, Guelph CORA, CORA Champs, Ontario Champs, Canadian Henley, Head of the Welland, Head of the Trent, Head of the Charles, Head of the Fish, NRC, CIRC, Ontario Indoor Championships
SPRING HIGH SCHOOL ROWING:
During our spring season Humberside Collegiate Institute and Parkdale Collegiate Institute compete at South Niagara Rowing Club High School Invitational Regatta and The Canadian Secondary School Rowing Championships. Practice times change in order to facilitate training. Typically Humberside will practice Monday to Friday 5am – 7am, and Parkdale will practice from Monday to Friday 3:30pm – 5pm.
All ARC juniors who are not Parkdale or Humberside students will follow the Club Program Offerings training times.
